Sophistication — melodic, lyrical, compositional — is an undervalued currency in popular music, though it illuminates the finest songs written by artists as diverse as Lennon and McCartney, Randy Newman, Ray Davies, Brian Wilson, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield as well as the songwriters for hire of an earlier era — Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, George Gershwin. It also defines the best songs that Joni Mitchell wrote at her creative peak, which, for me, stretched from the release of Blue , through For the Roses , Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns , to the pared and broodingly atmospheric Hejira The sophistication of her songwriting and, in particular, her musical arrangements is the essential element that sets Joni Mitchell apart from her contemporaries and her peers, whether the troubadours of the early 70s Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter scene or lyrical heavyweights such as Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and even Bob Dylan. And yet in the music industry, Mitchell has never really been afforded the kind of respect heaped on her male counterparts. Rolling Stone magazine once listed her at No 62 in its greatest artists of all time, just below Metallica. She was belatedly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in , but did not attend the ceremony.

We need you more than ever as the voice of out lives. As I repurchase a lot of this music for a second and sometimes third times,I wonder where are the up and coming Joni Mitchell's?

Then I sadly realize there are none. Enjoy Court and Spark, it will put a big smile across your face. It doesn't get any better than this. Well of course I love it! It's hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't know Joni Mitchells' music.

I was playing the disc the other day when my son, in his 30's, stopped by and took notice, I could tell he only wanted to listen to the beautiful music playing inside the house, as we were outside discussing something. I realized I probably haven't listened to Joni Mitchell that much since music went to discs I still have Joni Mitchell on cassette tapes, I periodically replace cassettes with discs cuz I hardly listen to tapes unless I drive the big old truck.

It's so nice to hear Joni's voice, like a crystal brook winding, weaving her tales lucidly through the forests of my imagination. Joni's music has evolved a lot over time and as a result she has been an unspoken influence to the people she used to play for at impromptu parties in the Canyon.

Hear her as they did on one of her best early albums, she took a left turn towards JAZZ in latter years not a bad thing, really , but she rocks on Court and Spark! The album that solidified Joni as a superstar. There had been nothing like this before; and very little this good since! One person found this helpful. I've admired Joni M. Holy smokes, I'm hooked. The drama of every song on this album, a woman adventurer throwing herself headlong into love and finding that nothing is more binding than freedom, well, Joni puts it across with some of the most beguiling melodies to ever hit the Top This is not a coffee house folk singer hippie Madonna no, not Ciccone, I'm talking center-parted hair, peasant blouse, acoustic guitar , this is one tough,clear-eyed woman with a way with words and a rhythmic sense gleaned from her recent discovery of mid-'60's Miles Davis, put over on the really odd but just right chord progressions she strums.

Her only pop music peer for words that actually scan well is Lou Reed, except Joni can sing. Lush, deep, and I'll say it again, for a Laurel Canyon millionaire, tough as death and taxes. You must hear this recording. I would rate this as one of the top 20 recordings of the twentieth century.!!! As you can tell from other reviews this is a pop album. This recording will go down in history as one of the all-time great pop recordings.

It is "a classic" to the very meaning of the phrase. It is so unfortunate to hear what is happening to music and radio today. And yet this planet has more access to a greater variety of music than it has ever had.

Had it not been for radio playing a variety well, as compared to today of music in the 60's and 70's I may have never heard of Joni Mitchell. I do feel that this era of music was quite special, unique in fact. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. I am thankful to have been exposed to such great music. Much like the best of Jazz during the beginning and middle of this past century and the best of Classical during its long prime. This recording is an example of the best of the best in Pop music from the 70's.

The cd is of the production quality expected. It plays well and has no discernible flaws. This cd marks the height of her pop creativity up to that point, and a nod to her future jazz focus by covering Annie Ross's twisted.

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. She continues her move away from the folk genre that she started from and she is here very wide in her musical expression.

A jazzy and slightly funky approach is quite predominant. A great and refined recording. Also the almost pure rock'n roll "Raised on Robbery" was a minor hit. Other fine songs include the title track, which might lead the mind to Mitchell's English counterpart in the s; Sandy Denny.

The end song "Twisted" sounds like something that might have suited Georgie Fame perfectly. The product arrived within the estimated time, the CD was fine but he jewel case had to be replaced so not Very Good but okay for its age.

The import stuff was fine. Arrived on time. Great CD in good condition. Filling a gap in my collection, memories of borrowing my sisters LP's thirty years ago!

Song Lyrics

Painter-turned-folksinger Joni Mitchell had slipped stark saxophone solos into her prior album, For the Roses , and her singing had often hinted at a capacity for bluesier fare than her guitar- and piano-framed confessional ballads offered. None of those hints prepared fans for this sudden, expansive shift toward a much larger canvas--a sleeker, orchestrated pop style pulsing with jazz elements. Deeply romantic, constantly questioning, classic tracks like the title song, "Help Me," "Free Man in Paris," "Same Situation," and "Raised on Robbery" display a more liberated Mitchell, ready to rumble with unbridled electric guitars guest Robbie Robertson on "

Now, those creatures are gone because their spots have been taken by the friars and other mendicants that seem to fill every nook and cranny of the isle. And though the friars rape women, just as the incubi did in the days of the fairies, the friars only cause women dishonor—the incubi always got them pregnant. Overcome by lust and his sense of his own power, he rapes her.

Joni Mitchell: the sophistication of her music sets her apart from her peers – even Dylan

Court and Spark is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. It was an immediate commercial and critical success—and remains her most successful album. Released in January , it has been described as pop , but also infuses Mitchell's folk rock style, which she had developed through her previous five albums, with jazz inflections. It reached No. Her previous offering, For the Roses , was released in November to critical and commercial success, and Mitchell decided to spend the whole of the next year writing and recording a new album that revealed her growing interest in new sounds—particularly jazz.

Love came to my door With a sleeping roll And a madman's soul He thought for sure I'd seen him Dancing up a river in the dark Looking for a woman To court and spark He was playing on the sidewalk For passing change When something strange happened Glory train passed through him So he buried the coins he made In People's Park And went looking for a woman To court and spark It seemed like he read my mind He saw me mistrusting him And still acting kind He saw how I worried sometimes I worry sometimes "All the guilty people" he said They've all seen the stain On their daily bread On their christian names I cleared myself I sacrificed my blues And you could complete me I'd complete you His eyes were the color of the sand And the sea And the more he talked to me The more he reached me But I couldn't let go of L. People's Park is history in Berkeley, California -- it might look like just a ratty little square of sandy grass and forlorn trees off Telegraph Avenue, but the symbolic and political dimensions of the Park are complex and deep.
